Case Study: Optimizing Your Distribution Plan
Introduction
Greetings, and welcome to this week’s Financial Flash Report. I’m John Stone, Senior Wealth Advisor at Stiles Financial, here with insights to help guide your financial journey. Today, we’re exploring a distribution planning—a vital component in our Stiles Financial Wealth Planning process aimed at ensuring that your accumulated wealth and resources support your priorities and goals successfully and tax-efficiently.
This week, we’ll consider a real-world example involving a client-family in their pre-retirement stage. We’ll look at the steps involved in crafting a distribution plan to fit their goals of early retirement, an active and fulfilling lifestyle, and securing a legacy.
Key Elements of Distribution Planning
At Stiles Financial, distribution planning focuses fully on your unique goals. We listen first to gain a full understanding of the priorities, concerns, values, and dreams inherent to each client relationship. We identify and define clear objectives related to lifestyle goals and aspirations, for our sample family this includes a work-optional lifestyle with the freedom and flexibility to travel the world, exercising their charitable inclinations to give back, and leaving a generous and responsible inheritance for their two adult children. Put another way, the peace of mind to live confidently and intentionally on their terms, throughout their lifetime.
We combine decades of experience and stewardship with best-in-class wealth planning tools and technology to realistically model present and future cash flows, asset values, potential life changes, and other factors, to identify best opportunities for success as well as challenges and potential gaps along the way.
Steps in the Distribution Planning Process
Our process starts with deep discovery and identifying your current picture. For our sample clients this includes more than $400,000 in annual business income, accumulated investment assets of $4,000,000 in multiple retirement accounts, $1,000,000 in a revocable trust, various cash accounts equating to more than $500,000, and real estate valued at $1,500,000
On the other side of the balance sheet, we have a $200,000 annual spending goal, continuously adjusted for a lifetime of inflationary forces, along with current mortgage debt, and expectations for future expenses such as medical and potential continued care needs.
Next, we utilize our planning resources to create multiple, variable scenarios, projecting cash flows, taxes, and portfolio longevity over a lifetime. We stress-test withdrawal strategies and tax-saving techniques to find the optimal path. As tax efficiency is paramount, our process projects detailed taxes for present and future years, guiding potentially advantageous strategies including Roth conversions, Qualified Charitable Contributions, and Donor Advised Funds, while strategically coordinating income flows to minimize tax liabilities. Because Tax Allocation and withdrawal sequencing are critical, we prioritize sources of income by account type and tax status to preserve capital and generate growth for future life needs and for securing a strong foundation for future generations.
In addition to managing portfolios and income streams, we continually monitor and fine tune the strategic plan to best navigate the complex landscape along with changing individual and family needs. Through this disciplined and dynamic approach, we work to ensure your wealth and resources align directly with your vision, and work in concert to meet your unique goals, balancing today’s standard of living with tomorrow’s legacy.
Conclusion
As we’ve just seen with our sample couple, distribution planning integrates unique goals, precise cash flow projections, ongoing net worth and estate value projections, and tax strategies to best design a plan for securing your lifestyle and legacy. Your distribution plan is one of the key components in the overall strategy for financial success over a lifetime. Stay tuned for future reports detailing other important aspects of our wealth planning process and please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions about your wealth planning considerations.
As always, thank you for watching this week’s Financial Flash Report. I’m John Stone, and on behalf of our Stiles Financial team, here’s to a happy and healthy weekend.
